David Zinn at JCC’s Apples & Honey Fall Festival

The Jewish Community Center (JCC) is proud to announce that renowned Ann Arbor street artist David Zinn will be in attendance at this year’s Apples & Honey Fall Festival, right here at the JCC on Sunday, August 30, from 2 to 5 p.m. In addition to a chalk art demonstration of his three-dimensional appearing masterpieces, mainly consisting of adorable animals and magical creatures, David will explain his chalk techniques and philosophies, with a Q&A session to follow.
For nearly four decades, David has been transforming the streets of Ann Arbor with his imaginative artwork. Since beginning his artistic journey in 1987, he has balanced commissioned projects for a broad range of prestigious clients with a passion for creating whimsical, unexpected public art.
Throughout more than 20 years as a freelance artist, David produced everything from theater posters and company logos to educational illustrations, murals at landfill sites, environmental-themed superheroes, corporate artwork, and even hand-painted dump trucks. Outside of his professional work, he found creative inspiration in unconventional places, using materials such as restaurant placemats, bar coasters, cake frosting, and snow as artistic canvases.
A simple box of multicolored sidewalk chalk inspired the work for which David is now internationally recognized. His signature street art is created entirely with chalk, charcoal, and naturally found objects, with every piece designed spontaneously on-site. David’s blend of street art, psychological perception, and creativity makes for an enjoyable visual and participatory experience.
Although many of his temporary chalk creations appear on sidewalks throughout Michigan, David’s characters have reached other parts of the country, as well as other continents. He has attracted millions of followers worldwide through platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, as well as features on CBS Mornings, BBC News and a TEDx presentation.
